is a doula worth the investment?

Is a doula worth the investment?

Of course I think so. I’m a doula because I believe this role truly makes a difference in women’s lives and helps contribute to better maternal health outcomes (statistically doulas reduce birth trauma and reduce birth related complications and morbidity, which statistically, our country has too much of). If you’re trying to decide on hiring a doula, you could ask yourself these questions:

⭐️How important is continuous, personalized support for me during labor? (If you’re giving birth in the hospital, the nurses and your OB/midwife will likely be in and out of your room during labor. They likely have other people they are caring for at the same time. A doula may be the only professional support you have that is by your side throughout your labor)

⭐️How familiar are my other support partners (husband, mother, sister, friend) with labor and birth? Would a doula help fill a gap in comfortability and knowledge around pregnancy, labor, and birth?

⭐️What are my primary needs or concerns for childbirth? How does a doula support those?

If you’re considering a doula but are concerned about the investment, don’t get discouraged. Remember that HSA funds typically cover doula costs, or if that’s not an option, ask around (ask doulas, midwives, and/or OBs) for local community birth support options that may have sliding scale or community funds for doula support. I offer a Community Birth Support Program that offers free or reduced-cost doula care to teens, women of color, and low-income families.

If you or someone you know needs or wants doula support but isn’t sure if it’s worth the investment, let’s talk! I’m happy to answer any questions to help you determine if the investment is right for you.
