you can’t pour from an empty cup

You’ve probably heard it before—there are a few analogies that speak to the same idea: “Put your own oxygen mask on before assisting others.” “You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

As a parent, making time to fill your cup is essential. It allows you to show up fully for those around you—your children, your partner, your community. But let’s be real: sometimes (okay, a lot of the time), that’s easier said than done. And depending on the season of life you’re in, self-care might look completely different.

Caring for yourself will shift between pre-pregnancy, early pregnancy, mid-pregnancy, late pregnancy, early postpartum, six months postpartum, two years postpartum, and beyond. What matters isn’t how it looks—it’s that you make space for it, even in small ways. Whether it’s a deep breath, a short walk, or simply drinking enough water, each act of care is a step toward filling your cup.

Personally, self-care has looked different in different seasons, too:

  • Pre-pregnancy: Running and yoga were huge for me!

  • Early pregnancy: Rest was so important.

  • Mid-pregnancy: I craved time with my people—filling my social cup!

  • Late pregnancy: Hi, rest—again!

  • Early postpartum: Showering, eating three solid meals a day (plus snacks), drinking lots of water, and getting fresh air.

  • 6 months postpartum: Making time for joyful movement in my weekly routine.

  • 2 years postpartum: Taking time away from my kids—an overnight trip.

  • 5 years postpartum: Not there yet, but I’ll let you know when I get there!

No matter where you are in your journey, remember that caring for yourself is caring for your family. You deserve to feel nourished, supported, and whole.

Other small ways you can fill your cup through your daily routine include:

  • drink your coffee or tea while it’s hot

  • get fresh air everyday

  • listen to music you enjoy

  • take a shower or bath

  • sit or lie down while using a tens unit

  • read something for fun

  • look up at the sky

  • put your phone away for a set period of time
